Where do the best innovative ideas come from?

  • Innovation is very important and I am trying to establish a more innovative culture in our organization. I was wondering from your experience where the best innovative ideas are born. Do they come from collaborating with customers, from collaborating with R&D, or a combination of them? Can anyone become a good innovator or is it always the same persons that have the great ideas?

  • If you are wanting to generate new ideas then it can come from anyone and everyone. The people who work closely with the product are not the ones to provide continued innovation as they're too immersed in what's already existing. In our work environment, we work with customers on a daily basis to gain insight for innovation as well as work with employees outside of the product to gain perspective. Those that are newly introduced to a concept see things in a completely different light than those working in it everyday. We'll also have our new employees provide valuable feedback when training them on products as "fresh eyes". There is always something new that comes up that we've never thought of before that will move our company forward.

With innovation and ideas coming from so many places, making those ideas practical and realistic has to be the same consistent product group that understands the target market and future revenue roadmap to actually make what should happen, happen. It's good to collaborate with everyone and then have the same people make the ideas that will truly serve a purpose a reality.

  • Here's what I have done. I love to listen to every person in the world that has a critique, a problem, and an idea. This is not innovation though. Ideas and innovation are not the same thing, at all. Innovation is in the solution to a problem more than it is in an idea. Ideas are formed around the problems, or needs that someone encounters, and cannot find a way to do it, the current functionality doesn't support it, or there's no easy way to do it. You can gather many people in a room, and they will all have their ideas about a product. What is needed is someone that can understand ideas, accept ideas, create a vision, and creative think up solutions, but more importantly, turn the solutions into reality, and the reality, the product itself is the innovation. So, I would have to challenge the question, is the goal ideas, or is the goal to generate ideas?
